John Wilkins gives a talk on the “Nuclear Power and the Environment" report.
Published in September 1976 by the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution, and often known as the “Flowers Report” after its chairman, the report covered many important aspects of radioactive waste management in the UK and made 15 radioactive waste related recommendations. The most important recommendation stated that:
“There should be no commitment to a large programme of nuclear fission power until it has been demonstrated beyond reasonable doubt that a method exists to ensure the safe containment of long-lived highly radioactive waste for the indefinite future.”
Progress on these recommendations over the last 50 years will be reviewed, including comments on current issues.
