Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is vital for all nuclear professionals whatever their age or status and it demonstrates a commitment to maintaining high standards of professionalism and excellence.

CPD is not just about technical skills, but also about the non-technical aspects of our working lives. It is a rapidly changing world that we live and work in. Keeping up to date with technical developments is vital to all professionals. So too is the need to exhibit interpersonal, presentational, and managerial skills for meeting modern professional expectations.

CPD allows individuals to stay up to date with the latest trends, techniques, and developments in the nuclear industry and is a crucial investment for both individuals and organisations. It enables growth and development as well as fostering continuous learning and success in today's dynamic and competitive work environment.

To simplify the submission process, you can register for The Engineering Council’s online professional development tool mycareerpath® which is available to anyone who holds a membership and is accessible through MyNI. This enables you to manage and maintain your CPD throughout the year and aids with the planning of future professional development. The Nuclear Institute accepts the mycareerpath® report which you can submit by email.

Mandatory CPD Audit

Each year, the NI will undertake a random sample of a proportion of its professional members to confirm that they are undertaking CPD. This sample will include all professionally active members and those registered through the NI with the Engineering Council, Science Council, and the Society of the Environment.

Do I have to submit a CPD record every year?

We recommend that you maintain your CPD record each year. However, it’s not mandatory unless you are selected to provide your CPD record for review as part of the annual mandatory CPD audit.

How many CPD hours do I need to undertake?

We do not specify a minimum number of CPD hours or CPD points. Our approach is based on qualitative outcomes and benefits gained as we feel that this is more appropriate to professional development and learning rather than relying on quantitative measures such as hours or points.

How do I record and submit a CPD record?

We accept CPD records in any format, but we recommend using mycareerpath®, an online Professional Development System available for use by all NI members.

What counts as CPD?

CPD encompasses various types of learning and development activities aimed at enhancing professional knowledge, skills, and competencies tailored to individual learning preferences and professional development goals.

There are virtually no limitations to the range of subjects that can count as professional development and can include activities from these areas:

Work-based learning
Professional activities
Formal/educational qualifications
Self-directed learning
Informal learning and other activities

What are the requirements under the Mandatory CPD Audit?

Each year, the NI will undertake a random sample of a proportion of its professional members to confirm that they are undertaking CPD. Individuals have 3 months from the request to submit their CPD declaration.

What if I don’t submit a CPD record for review as part of the mandatory CPD audit?

Members who fail to provide the evidence when requested or engage with the process will put their membership and (if applicable) their professional registration at risk.
