NEWS FLASH…..NEWS FLASH…..NEWS FLASH..…NEWS FLASH

We are pleased to announce the launch of the NCSWG and call for members.

Tuesday 24th February 2026, 4:00pm to 5:00pm. ONLINE and in person in Bristol. Please see flyer for details.

Purpose

The Nuclear Civil Structures Working Group (NCSWG) is a sub-group within the Nuclear Engineering Directors' Forum (NEDF) of the Nuclear Institute.

The NCSWG aims to promote technical excellence, innovation, and collaboration across the UK nuclear civil and structural engineering community.

It will serve as a technical forum for sharing best practices, harmonising design and construction approaches, and developing guidance that supports safety, quality, and efficiency in nuclear civil infrastructure.

It will cover the full lifecycle from new build, operational plants, and decommissioning projects.

The NCSWG will:

1.       Facilitate technical collaboration between civil and structural engineering professionals within the UK nuclear sector including designers, constructors, operators, regulators, professional bodies and academic partners.

2.       Support professional development through sharing of experience and knowledge including CPD events, technical training and mentoring. Collaborate with universities and provide help to students on career paths within UK nuclear sector.

3.       Collaboration with Engineering Council professional engineering institutions (PEIs), professional affiliates (PA), industry technical forums and learned bodies.

4.       Publish technical papers reflecting UK industry experience and lessons learned from UK nuclear licensed sites including major new build projects and future projects such as SMR development.

5.       Encourage knowledge of standards across different projects: including codes such as AFCEN (RCC-CW/ETC-C), Eurocodes and American codes.

6.       Promote the UK’s expertise internationally by our members attending and hosting technical conferences, joining industry bodies and code committees.  Act as focal point for the UK nuclear industry civil engineering for both national and overseas companies.

A key strength of the NCSWG lies in achieving an outstanding pool of experts drawn from leading organisations across the UK and Europe. This expert base will ensure that the group will not only be credible but capable of delivering tangible technical outcomes and influencing best practice across the sector.

Membership

The membership is primarily aimed at UK industry professionals involved in nuclear civil engineering and structures (designers, constructors, clients, regulators, academia).

As a minimum, we aim to have members from each of the UK nuclear site licensees, the major consultancies and the major contractors in the sector. Members will also be sought from the main Professional Engineering Institutions such as ICE and IStructE, Professional Affiliates such as Institute of Concrete Technology and NAFEMS and industry bodies such as SCI and Concrete centre.

Members can be engineers from any stage in their careers – from undergraduate to chartered professionals, fellows and retired engineers.

Steering Committee

The Steering Committee provides direction, ensures alignment with NEDF framework, and approves workplans and publications.
