Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB)
A diverse workforce strengthens decision making, improves performance, and creates better places to work. When people feel they belong, they are more likely to contribute, progress, and achieve their potential.
The Nuclear Institute is committed to creating an inclusive professional community where people are treated fairly, feel respected, and are able to express their views with confidence. We support a culture where different experiences and perspectives are welcomed and where everyone can be themselves at work.
As an employer, we will:
- Aim to reflect the society we serve.
- Maintain a working environment free from discrimination, harassment, and disrespect, and address inappropriate behaviour promptly.
- Embed DEIB principles across our people policies and day to day practice.
- Develop inclusive leadership at all levels.
- Build a culture where people feel included, listened to, and valued.
As a professional body, we set high ethical standards and expect the same across the profession. A professional community that reflects society is better placed to serve it.
We will:
- Encourage our membership and the wider profession to reflect the diversity of the UK workforce.
- Encourage our membership to support one or more of the fantastic organisations supporting DEI such as Racial Equality in Nuclear (REiN), Enable Nuclear, the Rainbow Forum, Women in Nuclear (WIN) and Inclusion and Diversity in Nuclear (IDN)
- Support, amplify and work with these groups to ensure our organisations and our members are aligned to their ethical standards.
- Welcome different perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences.
- Support members to contribute their views fairly, respectfully, and confidently.
We demonstrate our commitment to DEIB through our role as a membership organisation by:
- Promoting fair access to the profession through qualifications and routes to membership.
- Ensuring our Board of Trustees and committees reflect diverse skills, backgrounds, and experiences.
- Listening to members and stakeholders and applying good practice where it improves outcomes.
- Providing a professional environment that is respectful and free from discrimination.
- Upholding our Code of Professional Conduct and taking action when standards are not met.
- Monitoring and reporting diversity data to inform policy and decision making.
Key to our work is that we also actively signpost and encourage members to engage with established nuclear EDI groups, including Enable Nuclear, Inclusive Diversity in Nuclear (IDN), Rainbow Forum, REIN, and Women in Nuclear. We support these groups and work closely with them to share good practice, improve representation, and strengthen inclusion across the sector.
