Bootle/Cheltenham/London

National regulation.

International responsibilities.

Explore both as a Nuclear Safeguards Inspector.

The challenge

Often in the public eye, the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is an evolving public corporation. Essentially, we’re responsible for shaping and delivering the regulation of nuclear safety, security and safeguards across the UK. As a Nuclear Safeguards Inspector, you’ll assess and inspect nuclear material accountancy and control information at nuclear sites UK-wide and support the UK in meeting its international safeguards obligations. Take on a role of national importance that’s at the heart of what we do.

The role

ONR regulates 36 licensed nuclear sites in Great Britain (GB), including reactors, fuel cycle facilities, waste management and decommissioning sites and licensed defence sites. We also regulate the design and construction of new nuclear facilities and the transport of nuclear and radioactive materials. In this vital and wide-ranging role, you’ll ensure that all facilities are legally compliant, providing assurance to the public. Through this work, you’ll support the UK’s commitment to nuclear safeguards as part of the international nuclear non-proliferation regime as well as national safeguards regulations.

Day to day, you’ll be inspecting and assessing sites, and ensuring compliance with the law. You’ll also work to improve nuclear material accountancy and control standards so they‘re as robust as possible. This work will bring you into contact with a range of official bodies, including the IAEA, Government departments and other international safeguards authorities. That means you must be comfortable explaining technical information to a variety of audiences.

The person

Everything we do is critical to the protection of UK society, so rigour and diligence are key. You’ll also need experience in a high hazard industry, ideally, the nuclear industry. Specialist knowledge of nuclear material accountancy, control and safeguards would be particularly helpful. Whatever your background, you’ll need to be collaborative and able to work confidently with all kinds of stakeholders. With the communication skills to influence and persuade, you’ll be dedicated to working with personnel nationwide to keep the UK’s nuclear sites safe and secure.

The rewards

We offer competitive salaries at the ONR, with this role attracting a salary of £55,558 - £63,758 plus a London weighting allowance if applicable. Furthermore, you’ll be eligible for a substantial Civil Service Pension scheme (including ill-health retirement and lump sum family benefits). Plus, you’ll receive a generous holiday entitlement.

About us

ONR is a Public Corporation with a Mission to provide efficient and effective regulation of the nuclear industry, holding it to account on behalf of the public.
