Ricky Tobin CEng MNucI

Ricky Tobin is Subject Matter Expert in Process Engineering at Horizon Nuclear Power (HNP) in Gloucester, a role he has held since 2015. His experience in the industry spans almost two decades. He joined Rolls Royce in 1998 and worked in process engineering roles within its Nuclear Submarines business until 2012. From 2012 to his current role at HNP, Ricky worked as a Process Engineering Consultant on the Hinkley Point C Project at SOFINEL in Bristol. Ricky clearly has a passion for nuclear and says he wants, “to continue to make a significant contribution in a technical capacity to the nuclear industry.”

Route into nuclear
Ricky is a chemical engineer by background, gaining a BEng (Hons) degree from the University of Strathclyde. Ricky has always been interested in Nuclear Power since schooldays, where he undertook a ‘Physics of Nuclear Reactors’ module. This inspired him to apply for a graduate role at Rolls Royce. Fully immersed in work at Rolls Royce Nuclear Submarine business, Ricky was sponsored by his company through an MSc in Risk and Reliability Methods at Loughborough University. As part of his training at Rolls Royce he also completed the Nuclear Systems Design Course in the Nuclear Department at HMS Sultan Naval Training Establishment in Gosport. He continued to expand his horizons, participating in the first class training offered by both Rolls Royce and more recently HNP.

Nuclear Professionalism
He has been involved in Nuclear Institute events and activities since 2009 and formally achieved professional member status in 2011, following successful submission of a competence and commitment report, which was approved by the Membership Committee. Ricky says he is:“proud to hold the post nominal MNucI as I believe it underpins my professional experience in the nuclear industry.” “For me nuclear professionalism is part of a wider approach to promoting high levels of nuclear safety culture in all those who work in the nuclear industry.“ Ricky believes that this will become more and more important with the entry of new corporate players and increasing numbers of new recruits coming into the UK nuclear industry. Ricky’s next step will be to apply for Fellow (FNucI) status.
