NI Western Branch at the UK Big Bang Fair

Western Big Bang

The Nuclear Institute hosted a stand at the Big Bang Fair in Birmingham in March. It was a very busy event and thousands of pupils and teachers enjoyed the activities offered by the Nuclear Institute across four fun-filled days. Many said that this was the best stands so far in the Institute's three years exhibiting at the Big Bang Fair.

The activities included ROVs, Glove Boxes, Robosapien and a Thermal Imaging Camera. Robotics was one of the main themes, giving an understanding of how robots are used to perform tricky operations in the radioactive zones on nuclear facilities. Pupils were able to move Robosapien from place to place and pick up items. Using a tablet, they were able to control ROVs and move “highly radioactive” 3D barrels from one place to another.

Pupils enjoyed our little questionnaire and small prizes for answering the questions right. Everyone were able to participate in our competition to win Robosapien.

Teachers were interested as well, looking for some teaching material ideas and discussing pros and cons of nuclear power with NI stand members. This was an invaluable opportunity for outreach, and a chance to voice balanced opinions into the education of what needs to be our future workforce.
