The International Nuclear Youth Congress (IYNC) 2018 was organised jointly with the 26th Women in Nuclear (WiN) Global Annual Conference on March 2018. The conference provided a forum for young professionals and women in the nuclear field to discuss and collaborate on knowledge transfer, nuclear science and technology research and implementation, professional development, and communication.

Two representatives from Sellafield Ltd, Adil Sardardeen & Joseph Dabrera, were hosting a workshop at the event. The workshop titled “Advanced decommissioning – Robotics in Hazardous Nuclear Environments” was be carried out in collaboration with Dr. Salvador Pacheco-Gutierrez from the University of Manchester. The aim was to provide delegates with an understanding of Sellafield’s partnership with academia for utilising alternative and innovative solutions to the unique challenges it faces whilst utilising the traditional pub quiz type technique to engage with the delegates. The practical aspect of the workshop provided delegates with tools based on computer vision to perform object detection to be able to accurately sort and segregate objects and waste to optimise operations.

As a result of the excellent organisation and delivery of the workshop, it was voted by the delegates for the award of the Best Workshop at the IYNCWiN18 event out of a total of 15 workshops. The award was received by Adil, Joseph and Dr. Salvador.

Congratulations to them!
