Nature and Scope

The Independent Technical Assessment (ITA) team forms part of the NNB Internal Regulation function and provides independent review and challenge of safety case documentation, design changes, and a sample of design deliverables and other technical documentation 

The purpose of the ITA group is to provide independent review and challenge to project safety submissions, design studies and design modifications. This review and challenge should be in accordance with INPO, WANO and IAEA guidance and in line with UK Best Practice, to enable the project to produce and maintain a credible Nuclear Safety Case in support of the future operation of HPC and SZC. This will require liaison with NNB specialists, EDF specialists in France and at the working level within the UK Nuclear, Health and Safety and Environmental Regulators.

This post supports compliance with Nuclear Site Licence conditions 14, 19 and 20.

The post is key to the implementation of internal assessment and regulation within NNB GenCo.

The post holder will be required to support the evolvement of the ITA section and help develop the necessary processes and procedures to conduct independent technical assessment of safety cases and design changes covering design, construction, commissioning, and operational functions.

Principal Accountabilities

The team has three primary roles: -

• To provide assurance that the design assurance model is operating effectively, and to provide advice as to any areas for improvement

• To provide independent and impartial advice, cold eye review as the project develops design or safety case solutions.

• To provide an additional and independent barrier for higher risk design or safety case deliverables.

We are seeking to strengthen the team in the area of either Hazards OR Structural Integrity.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

Knowledge & Skills

  • Highly experienced in nuclear or other high hazard industry
  • Experience in internal and / or external hazards assessments OR structural integrity assessment of pressurised systems
  • Proven track record in building relationships and influencing senior stakeholders and Regulators


Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in the relevant engineering discipline (or equivalent)
  • For Structural Integrity position - Knowledge of relevant design codes (ASME / RCC-M), welding, NDT, materials properties etc
  • For Hazards position - Knowledge of hazards PSA, fire, seismic, extreme temperature, flooding etc analysis and assessment
