North East Branch & Durham Energy Institute Public Lecture : The Nuclear Element

The world's first commercial nuclear power station, Calder Hall at Windscale, England, was opened in 1956 and now 20% of the UK’s electricity comes from Nuclear power, many countriesstaff after 5pm. around the world are building new nuclear plants, should nuclear power be part of a balanced energy mix i the future?

The talk focuses – why nuclear power plays an important role as a power generator in the current energy mix, an overview and update on Hinkley Point C new nuclear build and possible follow up projects at Sizewell, Bradwell, Anglesey (Wylfa) and West Cumbria (Moorside). What is the rest of the world doing with existing Nuclear power generation and future policy and plans. What are the other future options (including life extension of existing plants and new nuclear technology). We have the technology and a strong nuclear history in the UK, but a nuclear future will be dictated by public and political support, key to this is: how do we learn from the past, ensure our safety culture underpins our aspirations and what are we doing to change public perception and understanding.
