Latest developments at UKAEA, including the new Materials Research Facility

Presented by: Monica Jong (Head of Operations, Materials Research Facility, UKAEA)

UKAEA's Materials Research Facility (MRF), based at Culham Science Centre in Oxfordshire is one the new developments to transfer to the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE), with major contributions to international fusion research and development with JET (Joint European Torus) and MAST (Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak) as a nuclear research centre.

It aims to not only close the fusion fuel cycle, but also to support fission and accelerator based materials research. In the newly developed MRF, both irradiation damage research and studies for new techniques to study irradiation damage, based on micro- and sub- sized samples are being executed in cooperation with both academia and industry. The presentation will provide an overview of the current status of the facility, the newly planned developments, techniques used for sample fabrication and handling, and will demonstrate the capabilites using some case studies.
