A highly successful Annual Nuclear Sector Dinner was held last week at the prestigious JW Marriott Grosvenor House in Mayfair, London.

Regarded as THE premier event for the nuclear industry in the UK, nearly 1,200 attendees from across the industry, academia, government, legal, commerce, and across the sector.

Hosted jointly by the Nuclear Institute (NI) and the Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) this year saw the NI take its turn in organising the function, which saw the Guest Speaker Sir Ranulph Fiennes captivating the audience with his tales of exploration over many decades, the awarding of the Pinkerton Prize and a special presentation to the former Member for Parliament, Albert Owen to mark the end of his 19-year career as the elected representative for the Ynys Môn constituency.

Mr Owen has been at the forefront of support for nuclear over many years, for the existing Wylfa site on Anglesey, now being decommissioned, and leading the case for new-build on the island from the very outset. He was presented with a mounted rock core sample taken from below the reactor foundation level at the Wylfa Newydd site, which was arranged by Horizon Nuclear Power and the NIA. We all wish Mr Owen well for his retirement and thank him for his steadfast support over many years.

The Pinkerton Prize is awarded for the article judged to be the best technical paper submitted to Nuclear Future, which was won this year by Mike Davies of Wood for his paper ‘The qualification of candidate graphites for future high-temperature gas-cooled reactors’ which was published in Nuclear Future Volume 14 Issue 4.

Hosting the evening was our President, John Clarke, whose term ends this month. Whilst running over the highs and the lows experienced across the sector during his term, he remains optimistic and hopeful for the future, and thanked everyone for their support during his Presidency. John will remain as one of the NI’s Trustees and will continue to play an important role on our Board.

Gwen Parry-Jones OBE, Chief Executive of Magnox Ltd will take up the role of NI President from 1st January, and we all look forward to working with her.

Here are some photographs from the evening.
