The YGN Speaking Competition was held on Thursday 28th May at Burges Salmon LLP, Bristol. It was combined with a YGN networking event and had many attendees visiting the numerous stands, listening to the presentations and chatting, whilst enjoying nibbles and drinks.

The presentations were interesting and informative and covered a wider range of topics than in previous years. The participants were commended by the judges for their originality of thought and ambitious subject matter.

The winner was Norma O’Mahoney, graduate engineer, Horizon with her talk “Reducing emissions; nuclear and the other outcasts”. Other prizes were awareded to Laura Daubney, graduate environmental officer, EDF, for her talk “The most boring Subject in the Industry”, to Gordon Cowell, Atkins with “Ensuring the Fundamental Safety Requirements of graphite reactor cores in the later stages of life”, and to Jack Fleet, graduate mechanical engineer, Atkins “Combined cycle generation for nuclear power plants”.

Norma O’Mahoney will now go forward to represent the South West in the YGN speaking competition national final. The NI would like to thank Michael Bray and Sarah Embleton of Burges Salmon for organising and hosting the event.
