Cumbria Young Person's Workshop to prepare response to NuGen Moorside Consultation

An open invitation  is being extended to all young professionals in the Cumbria region to have their say on the NuGen public consultation regarding new build projects in Cumbria.
You can have your say by completing the NuGen feedback form and taking part in a ‘Young Person’s Workshop’. The ‘Young Person’s Workshop’ will take place on July 21st from 16:30 to 18:00 at Whitehaven Civic Hall.

Full details of how to get involved can be found below in the open invitation to all young professionals from Dale McQueen who is coordinating the workshop and response.

An Open Invitation to Young Nuclear Professionals in Cumbria to have your say on the NuGen Moorside Project

Good Morning/Afternoon,

As you may be aware, there is less than one month left to contribute to the first stage of the NuGen strategic options public consultation on nuclear new build in West Cumbria.

Young professionals now make up a substantial proportion of the workforce in the nuclear industry and together we have a powerful voice to contribute to key discussions about the future of the industry. Over the next two weeks I am looking to capture the opinions and suggestions of young professionals in Cumbria to present a unified response to NuGen, the public and the industry as a whole.

Together, as a group of young people in the nuclear industry- Apprentices, Technicians, Graduates, and Professionals- we can deliver a powerful message to NuGen and other stakeholders, and demonstrate our enthusiasm and commitment to the industry in West Cumbria.

How can you help and get involved?

The deadline for the first phase of the NuGen public consultation is July 25th 2015 and so we will be working to tight deadlines. I am asking for you to:

  1. Read the  public  consultation  documents  available  at http://www.nugenconsultation.com/consultation-documents/   (read   as  much or as little as you like, the ‘consultation overview’ is concise and useful)
  2. Send your responses and suggestions via email to dalemcqueen1@gmail.com before Friday July 17th.
*All suggestions are welcome. For some ideas of the areas suggested for proposals by NuGen see http://www.nugenconsultation.com/media/1095/feedback-form.pdf. These include skills and training, local supply chain, local economy, transport links, and regeneration projects.
  3. Attend the  ‘Young  Person’s  Workshop’  which  will take place on July 21st from 16:30 to 18:00  at  the  Whitehaven  Civic  Hall  (the  NuGen consultation centre). This is not mandatory when submitting responses but a good attendance would send a positive message. At the workshop we will discuss the key issues raised and draw up a summary statement from the young people of the nuclear industry in West Cumbria.

Whilst it may be perceived by some that Nuclear New Build in West Cumbria is a foregone conclusion, this is far from the case.

This is our opportunity to voice our opinions on the proposal and help lay the foundations for the future of the nuclear industry in West Cumbria. For this to be successful we need your opinions, thoughts, suggestions, and objections.

While I realise that it is difficult to make time to reply to these requests, spending a couple of hours to form your opinion and send it through to be included in this response can have a big impact and ensure that the next generation of nuclear professionals have a say in the future direction of the industry. It doesn’t have to be a well-crafted essay, a few simple, considered points would be perfect and is actually preferred!

All young professionals from the Nuclear Industry in West Cumbria are invited to attend the ‘Young Person’s Workshop’; please contact myself to reserve a place.

Let’s make the most of this! I don’t want to stand by and watch a huge opportunity for West Cumbria pass by – I’m sure you don’t either.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the proposals,

Dale McQueen
