OVERVIEW                                                                                                                                                                                

The Nuclear Project Management Specific Interest Group (Nuclear PM SIG) is a joint initiative between the Nuclear Institute and Association for Project Management (APM).

Purpose

Our ultimate goal is to enhance the competitiveness of the sector and restore confidence in the industry amongst government and public stakeholders, in support of the Nuclear Sector Deal aims.

We aim to add value to the nuclear industry by enhancing the development and understanding of project, programme and portfolio management (P3M) disciplines in the sector.

Key principles and terms of reference

We have developed a series of key principles that will guide our contribution:

  1. We are here to add value to the project, programme and portfolio management community within the nuclear industry.
  2. We agree to focus on strategic issues that are specific to the nuclear industry that affect delivery performance.
  3. We agree not to focus on issues such as competence or generic project management and project controls processes since these are covered extensively by project management professional bodies and others. 
  4. We intend to focus our efforts on a small number of key issues that are relevant to the UK nuclear industry.
  5. We will avoid repeating the work of others.
  6. We will collaborate with other organisations and initiatives to integrate innovative practices into the nuclear industry.

The work of the SIG is coordinated by a steering group, headed by a Chair (Tom Eastup). The steering group reports to the NI CEO alongside a NI Board of Trustee (John Clarke). 

Our work so far

Since establishing our initial community in March 2019, we have held bi-monthly meetings which have focused on developing key themes for us to focus. 

We have identified three topics to focus on initially:

  1. Predictability of projects
  2. Culture and its role in project delivery performance
  3. Advancements in delivery models, which includes new ways of organising projects, the impact of digital technology and the Intelligent Customer interface

We have had fantastic representation from a wide group of organisations including site license companies (SLCs), academia, regulators, consultancies, engineering firms and more.  These have covered a wide range of disciplines including project management, project controls, programme management and PMO practitioners, and we are looking to extend representation further. 

How you can contribute or find out more

If you are passionate about projects and motivated to support the nuclear industry enhance its ability to deliver, then we would love to hear from you. Note that we are not just a place for project managers. For us, ‘project management’ encompasses any of the disciplines related to projects, programmes and portfolios including risk management, cost analysis, programme management, benefits management, PMO management, to name but a few.
