Do I need to have an engineering or science degree?
Anyone with an interest in nuclear is welcome to join the NI as a Learned Member. If it is Professional Membership you're looking for, you don't have to have a specific engineering or science degree. Many members of the profession have degrees in other subjects or none at all.
Who can join the Nuclear Institute?
Anyone who has an interest or job within the nuclear industry can join the NI. Read more about the different grades and requirements here.

What are the grades of membership?
There are two main types of membership which are split into different grades:
- Learned Members can either be Learned, Students or Graduates.
- Professional Members can be graded as Members, Fellows, Technicians or Associates.
I'm really not sure which grade to apply for, is there any help available?
If you're not sure which grade to apply for, you should take a look at the Membership page on the website.

Can I join online?
Currently the people wishing to join as a Learned, Graduate or Student can join online. To apply, click here.
Professional Members are able to download an application form online after registering here. This needs to be completed and returned by email or post.

I’m joining part way through the year, do I have to pay the full fee?
Your membership will be prorated to start from your joining date until the end of the calendar year.
How do I upgrade my membership?
You will need to apply using the membership form, which can be downloaded here after you have logged in. You will also need to complete the relevant Competence and Commitment form if wishing to register with the Engineering Council or Science Council.
I used to be a member - how do I rejoin?
If you would like to rejoin the Nuclear Institute, contact our membership team.
What is my membership number?
Contact the membership team who will be able to help.
What grade of membership am I?
Contact the membership team who will be able to check for you.
How can I get a replacement membership card?
To get a replacement membership card contact the membership team, confirming your six digit membership number and full name.
Can I pay subscriptions fees online?
To pay your subscription fees, log in to the Member Area and click on ‘Membership subscriptions’ from the right-hand menu. You will then be able to view any outstanding amounts and pay online using our secure area.
I've moved/changed company - how do I update my contact details?
Log in to the Members Area, select 'Update details' from the right-hand menu and choose which address you want to update.
I'm retiring – how do I apply for the retired member rates?
Complete the retired member form and return to the membership team via email or post.
Who is eligible for reduced rates?
Members who would be eligible for reduced rates are those on maternity leave, paternity leave, or adoption leave, those on a career break, those undertaking voluntary work or those have been made redundant. Please contact the membership team if you would like to apply for this.
How can I tell which branch I fall under?
If you're not sure which branch you fall under, please use the interactive map on the Branch Page; you will need the first two digits of your postcode. Alternatively, please contact the membership team. If you are already a member, you should be receiving mailings regarding events in your area. If not, you can sign up or amend your email preferences here.
How do I contact my branch?
In order to contact your branch, please visit the Branch home page on the website, and you will find information about the committee.
I can't access the Member Area, who should I contact?
If you are having problems accessing the Member Area, please contact admin, and someone should be able to help.
I've stopped receiving my copy of Nuclear Futures Journal - how can I find out why?
Log in to the Member Area and check that you don't have an outstanding balance on your account. Also please check your details, as they may need updating. If these are both correct, contact the membership team. Please note that Student members are not entitled to a copy of the Journal.
When are the subscriptions for the Nuclear Institute due?
Subscriptions are due on the 1st January every year.
Who should I make cheques payable to?
Cheques should be made payable to the "Nuclear Institute".
When will I receive the reminder for my annual subscription?
You will receive a reminder for the following year's subscription in October.
Which payment methods are available?
You can pay your subscriptions:
• Online using the Member Area
• Direct Debit (see below)
• Credit or debit card over the phone (0203 475 4701)
I wish to pay future subscriptions by Direct Debit, how do I set this up?
You should receive a Direct Debit Mandate form with your invoice, or you can download one here. You need to send this back to the Nuclear Institute before the deadline so that we can update your Direct Debit.
