Nuclear Safeguards Officer

£47,570 - £63,118 | Bootle/Cheltenham/London

520901 ONR 425x142.v1

Credible, confident and collaborative,
You’ll safeguard our future.

The challenge

A fast-evolving public corporation, the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is committed to shaping the future of regulation in the UK nuclear industry. As one of our Nuclear Safeguards Officers, you’ll help us do just that. In fact, you’ll become fundamental to applying and refining key processes and crucial policies – shaping the future of our organisation, and the nuclear industry.

The role

ONR’s safeguards role will change substantially at the end of the transition period following the UK’s departure from the EU and Euratom.  We will be directly responsible for meeting the UK’s international safeguards obligations and for regulating compliance against new UK safeguards regulations that will come into force when Euratom’s involvement ceases.  And as a Nuclear Safeguards Officer, you’ll be in at the very beginning of this new post-Brexit role.

In this crucial area, you’ll work closely with organisations in the UK and the safeguards inspectorates of Euratom and the IAEA, making sure UK safeguards obligations are met. You’ll also support the UK Government, providing independent, informed assessment of safeguards compliance. As part of this, you’ll develop a wide range of contacts at a senior level. Plus, you’ll provide second-to-none advice and support to BEIS and other government departments to inform safeguards-related policy.

The person

To join, you’ll need to have either worked in the nuclear industry, have experience in the measurement or accountancy of nuclear material, or have a background in national or international safeguards implementation and/or nuclear non-proliferation. Technically-minded, you’ll also have experience in information collection, processing, analysis and reporting.. This’ll be supported by an honours degree (ideally in mathematics, science or engineering), and quite possibly a post-graduate qualification. While you’ll be based in Bootle, you’ll travel extensively around the UK, so you’ll need to hold a full UK driving licence.

Importantly, you’ll have a collaborative ethos, and be confident working across teams and with different specialisms. And as a credible individual, you’ll positively influence others and foster excellent working relationships.

The rewards

We offer competitive salaries at the ONR, with these roles attracting a salary of £47,570 - £63,118. In addition, up to £15,000 relocation may be available. Furthermore, you’ll be eligible for a substantial Civil Service Pension scheme (including ill-health retirement and lump sum family benefits). Plus, you’ll receive a very generous holiday entitlement.

About us

ONR is a Public Corporation created to ensure the highest standards of safety and security across all of the UK’s licensed nuclear sites. Our inspectors are drawn from all manner of professional backgrounds including civil engineering, radiological protection, human factors, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and nuclear physics. And together they’re involved in everything from assessing safety cases to planned security inspections to the development and implementation of a new domestic safeguards regime.
