Equipment Qualification Team Leader (REF: 498857701)

EDF has an established UK-based New Nuclear Build team (NNB Genco) developing EDF's interests in new nuclear in the UK. EDF's ambition is to construct and operate two new EPR's at Hinkley Point in Somerset. Each plant will cost several billion pounds to construct and at the operating stage will employ several hundred people.

This role sits within part of our Technical Directorate. Its function is to carry out the Intelligent Customer role for the Engineering activities. This includes owning the design sub processes; it does this by acting as the conduit through which the Responsible Designer (within EDF Group) feeds the design in and this is disseminated to the UK based Licensee team for review and acceptance. It also works in reverse whereby requirements/outcome of review from the licensee team are feed into Owners Review team and that is then communicated to the Responsible Designer.

The design sub-processes cover:

  • The management of technical risks and opportunities for the Project with the purpose of ensuring that risks on design are identified early shared and understood by the HPC design stakeholders and that proposed mitigations are appropriate. This activity connects with the Project Controls risk management.
  • The formalisation, acceptance, validation and formalisation of owner's requests requirements related to all aspects and disciplines of design.
  • Enabling the relationship with the Responsible Designer (EDF/DIPNN, Edvance) by understanding the nuances between French/English design principles and having an appreciation of the cultural differences.
  • Working at a cross functional level to provide oversight of NNB/RD workgroups allowing the Licensee to give significant insight to and opportunity to influence design activities.
  • The review and acceptance of multi discipline designs produced by the Responsible Designer including:
  • Responsible for providing the technical support to the hold points/gates review process in order to ensure that accepted design information is available to confirm readiness to proceed to the next design or construction steps.
  • Safety case/golden thread: in the review and acceptance process, the team leader will make sure linking the high level safety case to the design and protect the golden thread of the safety case argument. He will have the responsibility to make sure the golden thread and safety demonstrations are correctly implemented in the RD and suppliers' documentation in regards to the overall safety case owned by DA.



This workstream area is also responsible for managing the relationships with NNB Functions related with design activities:

  • The management of relations with Design Authority in charge of producing the top level safety case.
  • The management of relations with Pre-Operations team in regards to design performances and operating model in order to ensure adequate engagement of the future operator in the design process so that maintainability and operability are duly considered.
  • The management of relationships with the Assurance team in order to ensure a robust relationship between the independent challenge, the Engineering Directorate and the Technical Directorate.
  • The management of stakeholder's relationships across all NNB Functions in order to ensure that Subject Matter experts can be called upon for input where necessary on matters related to design.



Nature and Scope

The primary purpose of the Team Leader position is to manage a team of engineers discharging the Branch Manager, you are reporting to, of a part of their responsibilities. Providing first class support to the UK HPC project on behalf of the Licensee organisation, this will mainly consist in enacting the role of intelligent customer, and managing the team so that the design sub-processes owned by TMA are properly, adequately and efficiently implemented within each design area.

The Team Leader will be required to develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders (including the regulator) ensuring that their expectations are met wherever possible

The Team Leader will have responsibilities for Technical Leadership, Staff development, Health and Safety, Work Planning, Succession Management, Quality Assurance, Financial management and skill development. This person will demonstrate the highest standards of focus on nuclear professionalism and safety.

In addition to providing technical leadership to the team, the Team Leader will take responsibility for technical aspects of the team's work in their own area of coordination and will enact the role of intelligent customer for engineering in this technical area.

The technical scope covers the Equipment Qualification to accidental conditions.

Principal Accountabilities

Primarily: 

  • Fulfil the role of Line Manager to specified individuals.
  • Provide technical leadership on Equipment Qualification scope through:-
    • the ownership of Equipment Qualification surveillance strategy, Project Quality Plan and the Design Quality plan as part of NNB Intelligent customer role
    • the ownership of the Safety Case chapter related to Equpment Qualification 
    • the lead of interaction with the Regulator
    • the lead of the Equipment Qualification Topic Group as part of the Responsible Designer contract
    • the ownership of Global Qualification Assessment (GQA)
  • Provide leadership & guidance to engineers under his/her control
    • ensure the delivery as planned
    • maintain the competency level



Ensure implementation of the design sub-processes for Equipment Qualification Scope, through: 

  • The management of technical risks and opportunities for the Equipment Qualification Scope
  • The overall coordination and formalisation of Licensee's requirements related to Equipment Qualification
  • The overall coordination of Licensee's review of design produced by the Responsible Designer including:
    • The management of stakeholders for review of design related to performance, project requirements, maintenance and operating requirements
    • The review of design against UK regulations and practices
    • The articulation of outcomes of design review with the Responsible Designer
  • Fulfil tasks as expected in the design sub-processes (e.g. attend or lead workgroups, issue surveillance plans, ...)
  • Work effectively with and maintain a strong relationship with the Responsible Designer (EDF-SA)
  • Work effectively with and maintain a strong relationship with NNB Functions
  • Provide mentorship to less experienced engineers to facilitate their development



The Equipment Qualification Team Leader reports and is accountable to the Balance of Nuclear Island Branch Manager.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

  • Experience of Leadership and demonstrable line management skills.
  • Experience within the Nuclear Industry especially in the Nuclear Island design field.
  • Knowledge of design process and design activities related to Nuclear Industry.
  • Understanding of quality requirements.
  • Strong decision making ability for resolution of issues.
  • Working knowledge of French language is an advantage.
  • Good communication skills and ability to build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholder
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Ability to resolve issues of varying complexity/risk
  • Strong writing skills



Technical Competencies• 

  • Advanced degree in a relevant science or engineering subject (or equivalent), Chartered Engineer status preferred
  • Demonstratable experience in Equipment Qualification
  • Possesses a broad knowledge of engineering principles in relation to power station design
  • Knowledge of power station systems/components is an advantage
