Central England Branch Supports Careers Fair at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory

On 27 February, Central England Branch (CEB) of The Nuclear Institute participated in the ‘Science in Your Future’ Careers Fair STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) event at the Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire, organised by the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) in partnership with Diamond Light Source.

Over 100 students and their teachers, from schools covering a wide area in our CEB region, attended this latest RAL and Diamond STEM event.   The careers fair was part of a day-long activity that included tours and workshop sessions.

Our objective was to inspire the students to seek careers in the STEM subjects, including nuclear.  In support of this objective we demonstrated a wide range of technological devices, with audience participation!  Our Branch volunteer team comprised Dave Nixon, Roy Manning, Martin Rayner, Ryan Cowan, Caroline Engevi and Graham Ellis.

The stand received a lot of attention from the students.  Particular interest was centered around the ‘remote handling challenge’ where students were encouraged to try and use a remote-controlled robotic arm to retrieve sweets from a 'skip'. Support and explanation were provided by various stand volunteers who were remote handling experts.  Many students who attempted this challenge also encouraged their friends to participate.
