Grŵp Llandrillo Menai join the Nuclear Institute

Grŵp Llandrillo Menai has become the first Further Education (FE) college to join the Nuclear Institute (NI), a membership that will benefit teaching staff and students alike in the Engineering and related departments.

This is just the latest step in Grŵp Llandrillo Menai’s preparations as the possibility of Wylfa Newydd draws ever closer. The grŵp’s membership was celebrated at the Nuclear Institute Wales Branch’s inaugural event, ‘An Evening with Gwen Parry-Jones’ which was held at Bangor University on the 10 December 2018.

The event was attended by industry representatives, suppliers, and Horizon apprentices. Representing Grŵp Llandrillo Menai was Catrin Williams, STEM Co-ordinator, she commented:

“As a college group, we are working hard to ensure that our students and apprentices, local businesses and people have access to the skills and training they need to benefit from a future nuclear build in the region. Organisational membership of the Nuclear Institute gives us a formal way of doing this, as well as opening new doors to training and events, it also gives us access to professional networks such as the ‘Young Generation Network’and Women in Nuclear (WiN).”

Speaking after the event, Andy McIvor, the NI’s Stakeholder Engagement Manager, said,

“we welcome Grŵp Llandrillo Menai to the NI, their membership demonstrates the organisation's commitment to support the nuclear professionalism and development of both staff and students. We look forward to working with the organisation, its staff and students, to get fully involved and to access the wide range of development opportunities available to our members”.

GLLM join the Nuclear Institute at an exciting time for North Wales and with the regional Growth Bid deal placing energy generation at its core, it is also an exciting time for Coleg Menai’s Llangefni campus the Engineering department transfers from Bangor over to a brand new custom built Engineering Centre at Llangefni in early 2019. This development has been funded by Welsh Government, Grŵp Llandrillo Menai, Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Horizon Nuclear Power.
