Marine Engineering Submariners Strengthen Ties With Nuclear Institute

Marine Engineering Officers and Ratings of the Submarine Service are set to benefit from enhanced development opportunities, thanks to professional recognition from the Nuclear Institute (NI)

The Royal Navy Submarine Service and the Defence School of Marine Engineering (DSMarE) has a long-standing relationship with the Nuclear Institute (NI). Both parties have been working together to ensure the new structure of Marine Engineering Submarine courses, still meet the “Nuclear Delta” standard set by the NI for professional membership and the professional standards set by the Engineering Council for registration as Chartered Engineer (CEng), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and Engineering Technician (EngTech).  In May 2019 full endorsement of all MESM courses was awarded, securing routes to these levels of professional registration and membership to the NI.

In line with the Chief Naval Engineering Officer’s initiative, set out in the Naval Engineering Strategy 2017, to provide the means and encouragement for all Engineers to achieve Membership and Registration the Nuclear Institute has a pathway for all ratings and officers to join the NI.  This also supports the professionalisation agenda for all Engineers across Defence.

The official signing recently took place in Pillar atrium, HMS Sultan, with Ms Sarah Beacock, CEO of the NI, Captain John Voyce, the Commanding Officer of HMS Sultan, Cdr(Rtd) Clive Smith, Chair of the NI Membership Committee, WO1 Nigel Brunning, NI Liaison Officer, Commander Andrew Mole, Cdr ME, DSMarE, and WO1 Matt Rowlinson, Command Engineering Warrant Officer.

Following the signing, Ms Sarah Beacock, Cdr(Rtd) Clive Smith, and the two Warrant Officers gave a presentation to MESM Staff and Students on the importance of professional registration whilst in the service and what the NI can do to enhance professional development.

Ms Beacock said: “I am delighted to reinforce the strong ties between the MESM cadre and the NI. The professional development framework that the Institute provides will assist the Navy’s MESMs in their career development and offers recognition of their skills and qualifications”.

Captain Voyce said: “As a leading employer of Engineers and Technicians I am delighted that we have been able to recognise our submariners through strengthening our ties with the Nuclear Institute.

The Royal Navy’s Marine Engineering Submariners are a highly skilled and motivated team who operate, maintain, diagnose and repair not only nuclear reactors but a range of marine systems that make it possible for the submarine to operate undetected underwater anywhere around the globe.

I hope that our MESM staff and students will make the most of this excellent opportunity to further their own professional accreditation.”
