Funding arrangements for the UK’s new nuclear safeguards regime until March 2022

Dear Stakeholder,

As part of the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from Euratom, arrangements have been put in place to establish a domestic nuclear safeguards regime, to be run by the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR). The regime will commence at the end of the transition period.

In November 2018, as part of the government response to the Nuclear Safeguards Regulations Consultation, Government committed to providing clarity on the future funding arrangements for the regime beyond December 2020.

I am writing to you to confirm that the Government will continue to fund the new domestic nuclear safeguards[1] regime until the end of March 2022. This goes beyond the commitment to fund the costs of setting up of the regime to the end of the transition period in December 2020.

We hope that this decision provides you with clarity on the near-term funding of the domestic nuclear safeguards regime. Further information on proposals for the longer-term funding of the regime beyond March 2022 will be made available in due course.
