Hannah Paterson reflects on winning the Pinkerton award and volunteering for the YGN:

I was honoured to receive the Pinkerton award this year from the Nuclear Institute in recognition of the paper;

'Novel glass formulations for post-operational clean out of highly active storage tanks'

co-written by Dr Clive Brigden at the University of Sheffield. This paper describes the future challenges Sellafield faces with high-level waste and summarises multi-year technical projects to devise alternative glass formulations to safely manage this waste. This award is a fantastic achievement for Sellafield Ltd, and showcases demonstrable progress and collaboration with both Universities, Innovate the UK and the supply chain. This is just one of the many complex projects being delivered by Sellafield and I hope to see many more articles in Nuclear Future sharing these with you all.

It's been a busy year for me also volunteering as the lead for 'Intro to' seminars on the YGN Strategic Committee. I have worked with a team of over 20 YGN volunteers from across the UK industry to deliver 5 'Intro to' seminars, many of which included site visits. Around 170 nuclear professionals attended the seminars in 2018, which is a testament to the quality of the seminars created by the YGN volunteers and the technical experts who spoke at the event. I would like to say a massive that you to all the seminar volunteers, the event sponsors and the speakers as we couldn't have done delivered so many excellent events without your help. I am always inspired by the leadership and determination of our YGN members and the innovative ideas they generate and 2018 has been no exception.

More information about the seminars this year can be found  HERE. We are currently working up a schedule of seminars to come in 2019 - if you would like to volunteer or sponsor please get in touch as we would love to hear from you.
