Remote sensing of chemical agents within nuclear facilities using Raman spectroscopy

The characterisation of radioactive material and other hazardous substances is an essential requirement for the nuclear industry. One of the key drivers is for improved in-situ analytical capability within facilities requiring decommissioning, reducing the number of samples needing to be transported for analysis in a laboratory.

This presentation shows how Jacobs and its SME partner, IS Instruments, have developed a range of remote Raman spectroscopy sensing technologies for characterisation and quantification within the types of challenging environments often found within the nuclear industry.  Examples given will demonstrate how large companies can effectively partner with SME’s to drive innovative technologies through the TRL system. This approach shows how low cost yet robust instrumentation can be developed and help solve a number of complex nuclear industry characterisation challenges for both UK and international clients.
