Fusion Developments and Diagnostics

Fusion Developments and Diagnostics - a webinar hosted by the Central England branch of the Nuclear Institute

UKAEA is at the forefront of fusion energy research in the UK, operating two of the largest tokamaks in the world – the European JET device on behalf of EU partners and MAST Upgrade - as well as materials testing, robotics and tritium research. There has been a recent surge in activity on site, and Chris Warrick will give an update on these recent developments including the recent success of MAST-U, and the new work beginning on the UK's Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP).

Subsequently, Anthony Shaw will give a short talk discussing some of the diagnostic physics equipment which is used to probe and control fusion plasmas inside these kinds of machines. With temperatures well in excess of that of the sun but densities far lighter than air, the environment creates many unique challenges for measuring the extreme conditions inside fusion machines.
