Lecture Synopsis:
A waste inventory aims to present the best available information about the nature, quantity and location of radioactive wastes and materials at a facility, site or in a country. Quality inventory data is necessary for developing appropriate strategies and plans for managing radioactive wastes and materials, with high standards of protection for people and the environment.

The inventory of wastes will change over time due to a wide range of technical, commercial or policy reasons, for example, if reactor lifetimes are extended, if decommissioning strategies change or if new technologies are introduced for managing waste. Inventory data at facility/site level and site/country level are discussed to demonstrate how they determine waste management options and waste strategies respectively.
