CEB October Lecture

The Role of Nuclear in a Clean Energy Economy

Presented by: Dr Fiona Rayment OBE (Executive Director; NIRO, National Nuclear Laboratory)

The UK Government has committed to a significant reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. In fact, the UK Climate Change Act sets an 80% decarbonisation target for the UK by 2050. Enabling this will require a combination of technologies combining nuclear with renewables and carbon capture and storage technology, in a future reliable, low-carbon and affordable energy mix. With additional requirements from transport, further electrification of the grid will result in requiring more energy in the form of electricity. For nuclear, this will mean looking at options beyond the existing construction programme for new large power plants that aims to create up to 18 GWe by late 2020. Options being considered
include small modular and advanced nuclear technologies. This talk will explore the UK future energy requirements and the role that nuclear can play in enabling this.
