A UK Geological Disposal Facility: Radioactive Waste Management’s approach to site evaluation and community engagement

Presented by: Matthew Meldrum and Annabelle Lillycrop (RWM)

A virtual (Zoom) lunchtime lecture: 12:00 – 13:00, Thursday 27th May 2021

Lecture synopsis:

In the UK, Radioactive Waste Management (RWM) has been tasked with planning and implementing a Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) designed to provide a permanent solution for the UK’s higher-activity radioactive waste.

A GDF will be one of the most significant national infrastructure assets in this country and will be massively important for resolving a long-outstanding environmental issue.

As RWM moves to a delivery phase, communities have come forward to express an interest in potentially hosting a GDF. This talk will provide some detail as to how we engage with those communities and our plans for evaluating possible sites, as well as touching on the challenges and opportunities with one of the most important and exciting projects in the UK.
