NI CEB Lecture 31 May 2018

NI CEB Evening Lecture:

"How do you know it works if you can't test it; science overview of AWE under the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty"

Presented by: Prof. Andrew Randewich (Chief Scientist, AWE)

Lecture Synopsis:

It is over 25 years since the last UK nuclear test was carried out yet AWE is charged with underwriting the safety and performance of the national nuclear deterrent. This talk will provide some historical context and then discuss the scientific and engineering challenges associated with certification in the absence of full system tests. This will include the large scale scientific facilities that provide non-nuclear data to underpin our models and also the high performance computers on which the calculations are carried out.
