The Intro to Regulation & Safety is back following the success of the event during the YGN’s Festival Week in 2020.

Throughout this webinar, delegates will gain an understanding of the ONR’s role within the industry, from safeguards to equipment and asset management. As well as this we will hear case studies and an introduction to nuclear safety from our sponsors Frazer-Nash consultancy!

Donald UrquhartDonald Urquhart - Executive Director Operations and Deputy Chief Nuclear Inspector, ONR
Donald has worked in the UK nuclear industry for more than 30 years and has extensive experience as a successful senior industry leader, regulatory leader and nuclear safety professional. During his career he has worked across the defence, civil operations, decommissioning and nuclear new build sectors, making notable contributions to each.
Having most recently held the appointment of Director of ONR's Operating Facilities Division, Donald has since been appointed to the recently created post of Executive Director - Operations. In this capacity, he has assumed responsibility for the day to day leadership of ONR's regulation of the UK Nuclear Industry.
Within ONR, Donald has held a range of senior regulatory appointments: Director of ONR’s Operating Facilities division, Director of it's Cross ONR division, Head of ONR's Emergency Planning and Response team, Head of Radioactive Materials Transport Regulation and ONR Lead for Delivery of the Generic Design Assessment of Hitachi’s UK-ABWR reactor design. He has also, in the more distant past, held a wide range of site inspector and project delivery lead roles.
Donald has an honours degree in Physics, and master’s degrees in Medical Physics/Radiation Protection and Business Administration. He is a long-standing Member of the Society of Radiological Protection and is a Chartered Radiation Physicist.

 Thomas LyonThomas Lyon – Mechanical Engineering Specialist, ONR
Tommy Lyon is a Mechanical Engineering specialist at the Office for Nuclear Regulation in the Sellafield, Decommissioning, Fuel & Waste division. After graduating LJMU with a Master’s in Mechanical Engineering, Tommy spent time analysing upgrades for the Large Hadron Collider at CERN and designing radioactive waste transport packages for Sellafield Limited. As a ucleargraduates alumni, Tommy is now in the process of becoming a Nuclear Safety Inspector where he will be responsible for safety assessments of a wide range of mechanical plant, systems and equipment used across the nuclear industry.

Cameron FrearsCameron Frears – Nuclear Safeguards Inspector, ONR
Cameron Frears is a Nuclear Safeguards Inspector. Cameron joined ONR in 2018, working in support of ONR’s delivery of the UK State System of Accountancy and Control of Nuclear Material (UK SSAC) project in addition to undertaking inspector training. Cameron now leads the Safeguards Inspection and Assessment Team, supporting ONR to regulate safeguards in the civil nuclear industry and enabling the UK to fulfil its international safeguards obligations to the IAEA. Cameron has led and coordinated all ONR interactions with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in respect of safeguards and the development of the SSAC, ensuring that the IAEA could continue to implement it’s safeguards activities in the UK following the UK’s exit from the European Union and throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to joining ONR, Cameron worked for Sellafield Ltd in technical, operational and strategic roles, primarily working to support the UK’s plutonium consolidation, storage and disposition strategy.

Chris JonesChris Jones – Mechanical Specialist Inspector, ONR
Chris has been a Mechanical Specialist Inspector at the Office for Nuclear Regulation since 2013, currently working within the Transport Competent Authority. His role includes inspection and transport package assessment, incident investigation and acting as the UK’s representative to the IAEA Transport Safety Standards Committee. Prior to joining ONR, Chris spent 12 years in equipment qualification for military systems including Merlin and Sea King helicopters, 105mm artillery ammunition and the AJAX armoured vehicle.
