Nuclear – a key part of the energy mix

Nuclear power is an essential part of the UK’s clean energy mix. Since the world’s first nuclear power station opened in Cumbria in 1956, nuclear has been a stable, low-carbon energy source for the country, producing enough electricity to power every home in the UK for 18 and a half years. Not only is it vital that the current generation of nuclear power is replaced with new generation, future increased energy demand needs to be met with low-carbon sources, namely nuclear and renewables.

With Net Zero targets and energy security high on Government agendas, there has never been a better time to join the nuclear industry.

The UK is playing an important role in advancing new nuclear technologies including SMRs (Small Modular Reactors), fusion energy, AMRs (Advanced Modular Reactors), as well as traditional large fission plants. will provide thousands of highly skilled, well-paid careers for the nuclear professionals of the future.

Events programme Our annual programme of technical conferences, seminars and webinars, as well as the flagship NI/NIA Annual Dinner every December provide opportunities for nuclear professionals to meet, network and share knowledge.
Regional Branches Our regional network is divided into nine regional branches, reflecting the geographical spread and landscape of the nuclear industry across the UK. Branches are central to promoting the work and charitable objectives of the NI, and play an important role in meeting local members' needs through wide-ranging programmes of events and activities throughout the year.
Young Generation Network The Nuclear Institute Young Generation Network aims to encourage and develop the UK’s early career nuclear professionals, and ensure that their voice is heard in shaping the future of our sector. Any member of the NI under the age of 37 automatically becomes part of the YGN.
Special Interest Groups Our Special Interest Groups are composed of leading experts and other interested parties to focus on key topics in nuclear, aiming to advance the understanding of nuclear science and technology.
Volunteer Network Our Volunteering Network offers many interesting opportunities to get involved in activities across the Nuclear Institute.
