| The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) is a non-departmental public body set up under the Energy Act 2004 to oversee the decommissioning and clean-up of the UK's civil public sector nuclear sites. While each of NDA’s nineteen sites is operated under contract by a Site Licence Company (SLC), which is responsible for day-to-day operations and the delivery of site work programmes, NDA’s function is to provide strategic direction and act as the body accountable for delivering clean-up of the UK nuclear legacy. Since being established in April 2005, NDA’s role has been extended to include responsibility for implementing Government policy on the long-term management of low level and higher activity wastes. The Energy Act 2004 requires the NDA to publish a Strategy for delivering the remit and formally to review it at least every five years. NDA’s first Strategy was issued in April 2006 and set out the challenges, together with the proposals for meeting them. Since then, a more rigorous process has been adopted which controls the development, communication and implementation of NDA strategy going forward. This paper describes the NDA’s approach to strategy development and sets out the programme of work which will lead to the publication of a revised NDA Strategy (Strategy II) by April 2011.
