The evolution of decommissioning in the UKAEA
Author:
Hills, Mary, Knowles-Rapson, Roane
Co-Author(s):
This article covers the development of decommissioning in the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), a Non Departmental Public Body (NDPB), and looks particularly at how the organisation has evolved and met the challenges resulting from the recent restructuring of the UK nuclear industry. The UKAEA grew very rapidly in the 1950s and 1960s but by the 1970s, with the transfer of facilities
to BNFL, the Ministry of Defence and the Radiochemical Centre, it was largely a research and development organisation for the civil nuclear power programme. While there had been some early decommissioning work, such as the BEPO reactor at Harwell and the Windscale AGR decommissioning demonstration project, this type of work had been of secondary importance to the main business of UKAEA. The authors describe the role of UKAEA in decommissioning at the Dounreay, Harwell, Winfrith and Windscale sites from 1986 to the present day.
