Siesmic Hazard Assessment for Nuclear Power Plant Sites in the UK
Author:
Bommer, Julian J
Co-Author(s):
A pre-requisite in the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) giving Consent under a Nuclear Site Licence for the construction of new nuclear power plants in the UK, will be the preparation of safety cases to demonstrate adequate protection of the public and the environment from radiation resulting from damage caused by internal and external hazards. One of the key external hazards is the vibratory motion caused by earthquakes. As licences for existing plants are renewed and new plants are planned, new assessments of seismic hazard at nuclear power plant (NPP) sites in the UK are likely to be needed. In this paper, the author discusses the challenges which this raises, in view of the evolving state-of-the-practice in seismic hazard analysis, and the options for new approaches to these assessments that could make optimum use of the available expertise in this field.
