| EngineeringUK - the rebranded Engineering & Technology Board - have recently issued their ‘Engineering UK 2009/10 Report’ which contains information and statistics covering engineering and skills in the UK. The nuclear annex of this report was extracted from a paper submitted by the Nuclear Institute which is the sole content of this article. The authors note that there will be a necessary annual intake of 1,000 graduates and apprentices due to new nuclear build. The UK could reap very significant benefits from a new-build programme. Estimates have shown that a fleet of new reactors would be worth £30 billion to the UK economy. This is because, although the designs may have been developed overseas, there are massive opportunities for UK-based companies to become part of the growing global supply chain. Some companies are already active internationally, supplying engineering and components to new-build programmes in Finland, China and South Africa. Fleet build in the UK could regenerate heavy manufacturing industry and provide the springboard for significant exports in the future.
