The GeoMelt® process involves the electric batch-melting of wastes to produce a safe and stable glass (vitrified) product. The process is an established commercial technology treating a wide-range of waste types including mixed radioactive wastes and various industrial wastes. The process was developed in the 1980s at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Washington State, USA, and is licensed worldwide by Impact Services, Inc. GeoMelt waste vitrification processes have been established in the USA, Australia and Japan with over 25,000tonnes of waste treated, to date. The process can be configured in several ways to meet a wide-range of site remediation and waste treatment requirements. These configurations range from large in-situ melts to aboveground melts in refractory-lined treatment vessels.
