The decommissioning of the former A59 Active Handling Building at UKAEA Winfrith has proceeded from July 2000 to a conclusion under the stewardship of NUVIA Limited. During the course of these operations, a number of important lessons have been learnt which may be of value to others conducting similar decommissioning operations on old, redundant facilities. These details are captured in this report along with a brief commentary about how these difficulties arose and were overcome. The monitoring operations on the significant quantities of debris created during these operations are commended to others and the early establishment of a building monitoring protocol supported by both client and contractor Radiological Protection Advisors was very helpful in driving to a conclusion the demolition of the enclosing building structure.
