Decommissioning of Kazakhstan's BN-350 Fast Reactor
Author: Pugachev, Gennadiy, Tazhibayeva, Irina
Co-Author(s):

Kazakhstan is almost halfway through an ambitious plan to place the loop-type, sodium-cooled, enriched uranium oxide fuelled, fast neutron reactor (BN-350) into a Safestore condition, involving
significant reduction of hazards from the presence of irradiated nuclear fuel, sodium and NaK coolant and accumulated solid and liquid radwastes. In the course of this programme, Kazakhstan
became the first nation to successfully improve drainage of sodium hold-up areas within the reactor vessel by remote means, thereby significantly minimising the amount of residues to be treated in
situ. The programme of work has benefited from major contributions by international donors, led by the USA and including the UK, Europe and Japan.
