Tony Gibson

Tony Gibson’s career in the nuclear industry spans more than thirty years covering all stages of project work from studies, R&D and concept design through to site implementation, plant handover, and asset management.  He currently works at Sellafield Ltd, where he has a dual role as Centre of Expertise Leader for Requirements Management as well as Deputy Head of Project Engineering Management.

 Tony’s broad set of responsibilities includes managing many of the interfaces between programmes, projects and suppliers, eliciting and capturing stakeholder needs, defining and managing related software requirements, resource management, and the development of the internal community and career pathways for Project Engineering Management to  ensure a competent, fit-for-purpose project engineering management capability to deliver Sellafield Ltd’s objectives and commitments.

Route into nuclear
Tony joined the industry in 1985 as a mechanical design apprentice with BNFL at Risley and worked his way up through various engineering and design roles into project management and on into project engineering management roles. His experience prepared him for the leadership roles he now fulfils for Sellafield Limited.  Commenting on his career choices, he says that: “I knew from an early stage that I wanted to work in the nuclear industry as it was both interesting and challenging as well as offering opportunities to deliver projects of national significance. I believed it would offer some great opportunities as an engineer, as well as the potential to develop and move into new areas, such as project management.  The industry offers a great career path if you are motivated and have the drive to succeed.”

Nuclear professionalism
Tony has an impressive academic and professional background and says that, “accreditation as an engineer and nuclear professional was always a priority.”  

Tony’s achievements include: a First Class Honours Degree from Liverpool John Moores University, and a MSc from Lancaster University, Chartered Engineer status with the Engineering Council through the Nuclear Institute and professional memberships with the Nuclear Institute, the Institute of Engineering and Technology and Association of Project Managers. His advice to the next generation of nuclear professionals is: “Take the next step to gain professional recognition through the Nuclear Institute. Membership not only demonstrates your commitment as a nuclear professional to the standards of the industry, but also to your own career development.“

Tony plays a key role in advancing nuclear professionalism through his role on the Nuclear Institute Membership Committee and is in the process of setting up a Special Interest Group (SIG) for Requirements Management through the Institute’s North West Branch. “A new SIG focused on this important topic would provide a clear focus for knowledge sharing throughout the industry and make the most of the expertise in the North West, a region which is so central to the whole industry.” Tony is a regular speaker on topics related to the nuclear industry, especially nuclear safety and Requirements Management.  He is also a keen advocate of developing future engineers and is a STEM ambassador.
